Let's Make Wreaths Together
Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 10:00 AM– 11:30 AM East Portland Collective, in partnership with Larkspur Portland, is happy to announce the return of our community-based therapeutic horticulture group programming! Please join us on Saturday, December 19, 2020 for our winter activity: Making foraged mini-evergreen wreaths — Zoom edition! This will be a fun opportunity to connect to our neighbors, tune into nature and the winter season, and engage our creativity, from the safety and comfort of our homes. To make it easier for you to participate, all materials and tools for the class will be provided and delivered to your porch! If you are physically able to, you are encouraged to also take a nature walk and forage for materials to include in your project, as an additional way to connect with nature and engage your senses. We will be working with a variety of evergreen boughs, branches, winter-hardy herbs, dried plants, feathers, mosses, lichens, etc. This activity will be appropriate for all ages. Children younger than 9 will need assistance to complete the project. If you are interested, please fill out this registration form and we will follow up with you as soon as we can: https://forms.gle/oHpBmPLXHaD4uh3L9. Space is limited to 13 people. We encourage everyone interested to apply, and we will prioritize BIPOC & LGBTQ+ folks. This class will be led by Kasia Terra (Larkspur Portland), a horticultural therapist living in East Portland. You’ll receive the link in your email if your application is accepted! Questions? Contact us at eastpdxcollective@gmail.com

Attracting Pollinators to the Urban Garden
Attract Pollinators to the Urban Garden Gardens are pollinated by a variety of insects that help flowers set seed and help fruit & vegetable plants produce an edible harvest. Mostly familiar with European honey bees, few of us realize the numerous flies, beetles, moths and butterflies that might literally be at our doorsteps, providing critical pollination services. In this workshop you will learn about the different kinds of pollinators that might be living in your garden, discover a plant palette to help attract and support pollinators, and go beyond the bloom to consider ways to provide shelter, water, nesting, and overwintering sites. This FREE class is being held in a virtual classroom, that you can access through the internet or by phone. You must register at https://emswcd.org/workshops to receive the information on how to access the class Offered through a partnership between the East Portland Collective and the East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District (EMSWCD)

Let's make Kokedama!
Kokedama is a Japanese gardening practice that derives from bonsai. “Koke” means moss, and “dama” means ball. The name perfectly and simply describes this beautiful art form, which creates living sculptures by encasing the root systems of plants within moss balls. These little treasures can be hung by a window, or live on a dish in spot that receives bright, indirect light. All materials, including home-care sheets, will be provided by Larkspur Portland. Space is limited to 10 participants, and pre-registration is required (registration page coming soon). Due to the delicate nature of this project, all participants must be 12 years or older. Younger kiddos are welcome to help their adults work on a kokedama together, and we will have a box of nature objects that they can play with and explore during the session. This event is our 3rd monthly community-based therapeutic horticulture series. These sessions are a great way to come together and connect with nature, and with our community. Please join us!
